The Estrella Coverup Pattern Release

I would like to introduce the Estrella Coverup Pattern! It is a FREE pattern here on my blog. This pattern features the Star Stitch.  I have been so inspired by many beautiful coverups out there and the Star Stitch works up perfectly for a lightweight airy piece. I used Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton yarn. This yarn is 100% mercerized cotton and works so well for coverups. It has great stitch definition and is sturdy enough for the wear and tear of swimming season.

This pattern makes a coverup in sizes S/M and L/XL  It is easily adjustable to make shorter or longer. This pattern features the Star Stitch. I love the texture this beautiful stitch gives this coverup.  There is a link to a video tutorial if you are not familiar with this stitch.

If you prefer an ad-free version of this pattern it is available for purchase at the following links:

Star Stitch Video Tutorial:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tZGEYxhoCX4

This is a great video from the American Crochet Council that shows you the basic stitches for the star stitch. Mine is a little different because I have the rows of dc before and after.

Star St =Star Stitch.

At beginning of row, after ch 3, draw up loop in 2nd ch from hook, draw up a loop from the next ch, draw up a loop in ch 1 sp, draw up a loop in next st. There will be 5 loops on your hook. Yarn over and draw through all 5 loops. Ch 1. (The ch 1 becomes the ‘eye’ of the star.) Next star will be, draw up a loop in eye of star st just made, draw up a loop in last loop of previous star st, draw up a loop in ch 1 sp, draw up a loop in next dc. There will be 5 loops on your hook. Yarn over and draw through all 5 loops. Ch 1.

Swatch pattern: Do row 1-4 twice. That should give you a good idea of your gauge.

Make a chain of any even number. I suggest 20.

Row 1 Sc in 3rd ch from hook. Sc across. Turn.

Row 2 Ch 4. (Counts as 1st dc and ch1). Sk 1st and 2nd st. * Dc in next st, ch1, sk 1 * repeat from * until end of row. Dc in last st. Turn.

Row 3 Ch 3. Star st across (see special stitches) Turn.

Row 4 Ch 4. Dc in ‘eye’ of 1st star, * ch 1, dc in eye of next star. * repeat until end of row. Turn.

Notes:

  • Chain 3 or 4 at the beginning of a row DOES count as a stitch.
  • The Star Stitch is a little tricky to learn. I recommend practicing with it before you start. The video link above is very helpful.
  • The front of the stars becomes the RS.
  • Stitch counts for sizes are as following: S/M(L/XL)
  • This pattern has 2 pieces: Back and Front.
