Yarn Review: My New Friend, Flikka and FREE Bag Pattern

I have found a new favorite yarn, one of Lion Brand‘s newest creations, Flikka! I had heard and read about this yarn and was so happy to find it at my local Hobby Lobby. It’s so easy to work with! It has a multi-color strand with a natural base strand. It says it’s a 3 weight, but it’s on the heavier end of the 3 weight spectrum and works up more like a 4 weight. It is machine washable and machine dryable.

The details:

  • Weight: 3 weight
  • Content: 50% cotton, 50% polyester
  • Skein Weight: 3.5oz/100g skein
  • Yards/Meters: 196 yds/179m per skein
  • Machine washable and dryable.
  • 11 colorways

The Colors: I just love the colorways in this yarn and there are 11 to choose from. The names are great, too! The yarn I worked with is  Keepsake. It’s got pink, light blue, purple, gray, and beige running through it.

Where to buy it and pricing: It’s very affordable! The Lion Brand website has it for $3.99 a skein. Great deal! Click here to order it from their website: Flikka.

I was lucky enough to find it at my local Hobby Lobby, but I don’t think all of their stores are carrying it yet. It’s $4.99 a skein there.

I really enjoyed working with this yarn and highly recommend it. Great affordability and quality. It’s versatile and would be great for many different projects-like light garments and baby blankets. It washed up perfectly and responded well to blocking. I would love to see what you make with it. Tag me on instagram, @daisystitchco, with pics of your Flikka creations!

The FREE  Pattern:

About the same time that I found this yarn, my daughter, Hannah, asked me to make a bag for her. She is in college and has an internship and a part-time job as a swim instructor this summer. She wanted something larger that would fit a change of clothes and other items she needs on a busy day. She also wanted it to be crossbody for easy portability.  I decided to use Flikka and create a bag for her.

Spring Market Bag Pattern

Experience Level: Beginner

Materials:

Yarn 2 skeins Lion Brand Flikka in Keepsake 392 yds total.

Note: this yarn is a heavier 3 weight yarn. Worsted weight yarn will work up similarly.

Crochet Hook: K /10.5/6.5mm

Scissors

Yarn Needle

Tape Measure

Gauge:            13 stitches= 4”             7 rows= 4”

Be sure to check your gauge. I tend to crochet tighter, yours may be a little different. I highly recommend doing a test swatch before getting started.

Stitch Abbreviations:

Ch = chain

Dc = double crochet

Sc = single crochet

Sp = space

St = stitch

Ss = Slip stitch

Sk = skip a stitch

Special Notes:

  • Chain 3 at the beginning of a row DOES count as a stitch.
  • This bag is worked in the round. I find it helpful to place a stitch marker at the beginning of each row, to help keep track of where the rows start and begin.

Ch 49.

Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across until last ch. 3 sc in last ch. Continue sc on other side of ch. Sc in each st across until original 1st ch. 3 sc in 1st ch. Ss in 1st sc.

Rows 2-4: Ch 1. Sc in same st and in each st across until end. 3 sc in middle end st from previous row. Continue sc until last st. 3 sc in last st. Ss in 1st sc.

Rows 5-8: Ch 1. Sc in each st around. Ss in 1st sc.

Row 9: Ch 4. (Counts as dc and ch 1) Dc in 3rd st. * Ch 1, sk 1, dc in next st* Repeat from * around. Ss in top of ch 3.

Rows 10-28: Ss into 1st ch sp. Ch 4. * Dc in next ch sp. Ch 1. * Repeat around. Ss in top of ch 3.

Rows 29-32: Ch 1. Sc in same st and  in each st around. Ss in 1st sc.

Fasten off.

Strap: Find center of each side and mark with a st marker.

Join yarn in 3rd st before center.

Ch 1. Sc in same st. Sc in next 5 st. Turn.

Ch 1. Sc in each st across. Turn.

Continue until strap is desired length. It should be long enough to put the bag across your body. Mine was 40”.

Attach to other side of bag, 3 st before st marker.

Fasten off.

Border:

The border is worked around the top row and strap.

Join yarn in 1st sc after strap. Ch 1. Sc in same st, ss in same st. Sk 1. * Sc, ss in next st, sk 1*. Repeat until end of row and worked evenly across strap. Ss in 1st sc.

Do the same for the other side of strap and top row.

 Fasten off!

Blocking

 I blocked mine to 17” x 15” to get nice straight edges.

And you are finished! Be sure to take pics of your bag and tag me on Instagram, @daisystitchco. Can’t wait to see what you create!

Thanks for reading and making!
